Depending upon the facility and types of duties performed, healthcare settings may employ either registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN) or both. There are notable differences between the two types of nurses. Registered nurses are usually trained during a two year period and graduate with an associates degree in nursing. LPNs (known as licensed vocational nurses, or LVN, in some states) are trained in programs that last about one year (more or less depending upon the program). Some nurses complete an LPN program prior to going through RN training.
Stress is not limited to nurse-on-nurse bullying. It can come from belligerent patients and hostile family members, as well as subordinates, doctors and administrators. Negative behaviors can occur from situations such as dealing with burned out certified nursing assistants (CNA) who snap due to overwork, to doctors or administrators doctor recruitment agency taking out their frustrations on an unfortunate nurse. The onus for ending workplace hostility rests with management officials, who have not always seen a need to tackle the problem. It is not unusual for administrators to insist that these issues be handled among the individuals directly involved. These efforts often end in failure.
